Why Do We Play Small Sided Games?

Small sided games are more fun for players and develop skills more quickly than traditional 11 v 11 games.  This statement from the US Youth Soccer Association explains why.  It comes down to more touches on the ball.

Understanding Youth Soccer
A free e-book about costs, rules and sportsmanship

Youth soccer should emphasize having fun, learning skills, and learning good
sportsmanship. Playing competitively should not be emphasized until children have
mastered the basic skills. While the object of the game is to win, children should not
be pressured to win, only to try their best.
